Yellowfin Tuna Fishing in Quepos — The Ultimate Guide

Fast, powerful, and available year-round — here's how we find, fight, and land yellowfin tuna off the coast of Quepos, Costa Rica.

Quick Answer

Yellowfin tuna are available year-round off Quepos, with peak activity from May through October during the green season. They're most often found around current lines, temperature breaks, and schools of dolphin or floating debris (FADs), and are targeted by trolling lures or chunking with cut bait on our 3/4-day and full-day offshore charters.

Why Yellowfin Tuna Is One of Quepos' Best Catches

Ask any experienced angler what they'd target if they could only fish Quepos once, and yellowfin tuna comes up constantly. They're fast, they're powerful, they run in numbers, and — unlike sailfish or marlin, which we release — a yellowfin makes for some of the best eating in the ocean. It's a rare combination: a genuine fight and a genuine meal.

Quepos sits close to deep offshore structure where yellowfin schools travel and feed, which means shorter runs to find them and more time actually fishing compared to ports farther from blue water.

Best Time to Catch Yellowfin Tuna in Quepos

Yellowfin tuna are caught in Quepos waters year-round, but the fishing turns from good to genuinely peak from May through October, during the green season. Warmer water and heavier bait activity during these months pull tuna — often in large schools — closer to structure and current lines within reach of a full-day charter.

December through April, the dry season, still produces solid yellowfin action, just typically in smaller numbers per school compared to the mid-year peak.

Where to Find Yellowfin Tuna Off Quepos

Yellowfin tuna key in on three things: temperature breaks, current edges, and bait. Our captains watch for color changes in the water, diving frigate birds working over bait balls, and — most reliably — pods of spinner dolphin, which yellowfin often travel and feed alongside. Floating debris and weed lines offshore can also hold fish, especially early in the morning.

How We Target Yellowfin Tuna

Trolling with cedar plugs, feathers, or skirted lures covers water quickly and is often how we first locate a school. Once fish are marked or dolphin are spotted, we'll switch to chunking — chumming with cut bait and drifting a hooked chunk through the slick — which tends to produce the bigger fish in the school.

What to Expect on the Fight

Yellowfin in Quepos waters commonly run 20-80 lbs, with larger fish well into the hundreds not unheard of during peak months. Pound for pound, they're one of the hardest-fighting fish in these waters — expect long, fast runs and real arm burn on standup tackle, especially from a fish in the 50 lb+ class.

Yellowfin Tuna Table Fare

Unlike billfish, which we practice catch-and-release on, yellowfin tuna is one of the best-eating fish you'll ever catch — sashimi-grade if bled and iced immediately. Many guests keep a portion of their catch; ask your captain about cleaning and bagging fish to take back to your hotel or rental kitchen.

Which Charter Is Best for Tuna?

Our 3/4-Day and Full-Day Offshore charters are built for yellowfin tuna, since the best grounds are typically 15-30+ miles out. A Full-Day gives the most time to work a school once found and chase birds or dolphin over a wider area; a 3/4-Day still reaches productive water with a shorter overall day. Half-Day Inshore charters generally stay too close to shore for consistent yellowfin action.
