Offshore and Inshore Fishing
Seasons in Manuel Antonio and Quepos
The waters surrounding Manuel Antonio and Quepos offer excellent sportfishing opportunities throughout the year, with different species becoming more active depending on the season. Because the Pacific Ocean fishing grounds are located relatively close to shore, anglers can enjoy both offshore and inshore fishing year-round, with certain months offering peak conditions for specific species.
Offshore fishing seasons are particularly famous for billfish. The spectacular Sailfish reaches its peak season from December through April, when large numbers of sailfish migrate through the region’s deep waters located approximately 20–40 miles offshore. During these months, anglers often experience multiple sailfish encounters in a single day. Marlin fishing, including encounters with the powerful Blue Marlin and Black Marlin, is typically strongest from May through September, when warmer ocean currents move closer to the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
Other offshore species such as Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi-mahi can be found throughout much of the year, with particularly strong fishing from May through November, when floating debris, weed lines, and feeding birds often indicate productive fishing areas offshore.
Inshore fishing seasons around Manuel Antonio and Quepos are also highly productive. Species such as the iconic Roosterfish are most active between May and October, when baitfish gather along beaches, reefs, and rocky structures typically located 3–15 miles from the coast. Reef species like the powerful Cubera Snapper are often more active during the green season from June to October, when nutrient-rich waters attract baitfish to coastal reefs.
Thanks to Costa Rica’s stable tropical climate and rich Pacific waters, Manuel Antonio and Quepos remain two of the most reliable sportfishing destinations in the world, offering anglers the opportunity to target a wide range of offshore and inshore species during every season of the year.
