Quepos vs Manuel Antonio
Where to Stay for a Fishing Trip

Choosing between staying in Quepos town or the
Manuel Antonio area? Here’s our local guide to help
you pick the best base for your fishing vacation
in Costa Rica.

When planning a fishing trip to Quepos, one of the first decisions you'll face is where to base yourself — the town of Quepos or the Manuel Antonio area, about 7 kilometers down the road. Both options have real advantages, and the right choice depends on your priorities: proximity to the marina, access to the national park, budget, and the kind of atmosphere you're looking for.

As local fishing operators based at Quepos Marina, we get this question constantly. Here's our honest, experience-based breakdown of both areas to help you make the best decision for your trip.

Both Quepos and Manuel Antonio are excellent bases for a fishing trip — the key difference is atmosphere. Quepos is a working fishing town with authentic local character. Manuel Antonio is a tourist-oriented beach destination with more upscale hotel options.

OUR RECOMMENDATION

If fishing is your primary focus — stay in Quepos. If you're combining fishing with beach time, the national park, and other activities — Manuel Antonio gives you the best of both worlds.

Staying in Quepos Town

Quepos is a compact, authentic Costa Rican fishing town built around the marina. Staying here puts you within walking distance of Quepos Marina — the departure point for all our charters. For early morning departures at 6:00 AM, this convenience is hard to beat. No taxi, no alarm set for 4:30 AM to make it across town in time.

The town has excellent local restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies, and a vibrant street atmosphere that feels genuinely Costa Rican. Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses to comfortable mid-range hotels — generally at lower prices than the Manuel Antonio area.

Best for: Anglers who want maximum convenience for early departures, budget-conscious travelers, and anyone who prefers an authentic local atmosphere over a resort setting.

Staying in Manuel Antonio

The Manuel Antonio area stretches along the road between Quepos and the national park entrance — about 7 kilometers from the marina. This zone has the highest concentration of upscale hotels, boutique lodges, and jungle villas in the region, many with stunning ocean views and swimming pools.

Staying in Manuel Antonio makes sense if fishing is just one part of a broader vacation that includes beach time, the national park, and other activities. The 10-minute drive to the marina is easy with a taxi or rental car, and the area's amenities are genuinely impressive.

Best for: Couples, families combining fishing with beach and national park visits, and travelers who prioritize hotel amenities and ocean views.

Getting to Quepos Marina

Quepos Marina is located right in the center of Quepos town — easy to find and with parking available. If you're staying in Manuel Antonio, a taxi to the marina costs approximately $5–8 USD and takes about 10 minutes. Most hotels can arrange this for you, or your charter operator can coordinate pickup.

How to Get to Quepos

From San José, Quepos is approximately 3.5 hours by car via the Costanera Sur highway — a scenic drive along the Pacific coast. Direct buses run from San José's Tracopa terminal to Quepos several times daily. The domestic airport in Quepos (XQP) has regular flights from San José with Sansa Airlines — the 25-minute flight is a popular option for shorter trips.

What Else to Do in the Area

Quepos and Manuel Antonio together offer an exceptional range of activities beyond fishing — including the Manuel Antonio National Park (one of the most biodiverse parks in Costa Rica), ATV jungle tours, canyoning, catamaran sunset cruises, and some of the best restaurants on the Central Pacific coast.

Many of our fishing guests combine their charter with a full day at the national park, a catamaran sunset cruise, or an ATV jungle adventure — making for a complete Costa Rica vacation experience.
