Inshore vs Offshore Fishing in Quepos
Which Charter is Right for You?
Not sure whether to book a half-day inshore or a full-day offshore charter? Here’s everything you need to know to choose the right fishing experience for your group.
One of the most common questions we get from first-time visitors to Quepos is: should I book a half-day inshore charter or a full-day offshore charter? The honest answer is — it depends on what you're looking for. Both options offer world-class fishing, but they deliver very different experiences.
This guide breaks down the key differences so you can choose the charter that's right for your group, your budget, and the species you want to target.
Both inshore and offshore fishing in Quepos are exceptional — the decision comes down to target species, time available, budget, and how your group handles open ocean conditions.

If it's your first time fishing in Costa Rica or you have kids in the group, start with the half-day inshore charter. You can always upgrade to offshore on your next visit.
Half-Day Inshore Fishing Charter
The half-day inshore charter is the perfect introduction to sport fishing in Quepos. Departing from Quepos Marina at 6:00 AM, you'll spend 4–5 hours targeting roosterfish, cubera snapper, jack crevalle, and sierra mackerel along the rocky shorelines and beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park.
Inshore fishing takes place in calm, protected waters just 1–5 miles from shore — making this the ideal option for families with children, first-time anglers, or anyone who prefers to avoid the open ocean. The action is typically fast-paced and exciting, with multiple species available throughout the year.
Best for: Beginners, families, budget-conscious travelers, and anyone targeting roosterfish or snapper. Also ideal if you have limited time and want to be back by noon.
Full-Day Offshore Fishing Charter
The full-day offshore charter is the flagship experience at Costa Rica Fishing Company. Departing at 6:00 AM and returning around 3:00–4:00 PM, this 8–10 hour trip takes you 15–40 miles offshore to target sailfish, blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, and wahoo in the deep blue waters of the Pacific.
Offshore fishing requires traveling through open ocean conditions — some anglers experience seasickness, particularly during the green season when swells can be larger. If you or anyone in your group is prone to motion sickness, take precautions before departing.
Best for: Experienced anglers, bucket-list trips, groups targeting trophy species like sailfish and marlin, and anyone who wants the full Costa Rica sport fishing experience.

Which Charter Should You Choose?
Here's a simple way to decide: if you want trophy pelagic fish like sailfish and marlin, go offshore. If you want a relaxed, action-packed morning targeting a variety of species close to shore, go inshore.
Can You Do Both?
Absolutely — and many guests do. A popular combination is to book the half-day inshore charter on your first morning to get comfortable on the water and target roosterfish, then book the full-day offshore charter later in your trip for sailfish and marlin. This gives you the full Costa Rica fishing experience.
What About Seasickness?
Inshore fishing is almost entirely protected from ocean swells — seasickness is very rare. Offshore trips involve crossing the open Pacific, where swells of 3–6 feet are common. If you or anyone in your group is prone to motion sickness, take Dramamine or Bonine the night before and morning of the charter.
What's the Best Time of Year?
Both charters operate year-round. Inshore fishing peaks from May through October when roosterfish and snapper are most active. Offshore fishing is best from December through April for sailfish, and May through September for blue marlin and tuna.
