Why Quepos for Sailfish?
The Pacific waters off Quepos benefit from a unique combination of geography and ocean currents that create ideal conditions for sailfish year-round. The continental shelf drops sharply just a few miles offshore, bringing deep, nutrient-rich water close to the coast — and with it, massive concentrations of baitfish that attract sailfish in extraordinary numbers.
Add to this the expertise of Quepos captains — many with 20+ years of experience specifically targeting Pacific sailfish — and you have the recipe for one of the most consistent sailfish fisheries anywhere in the world.
Dry Season — Peak Sailfish (December–April)
The dry season is the undisputed peak of sailfish activity in Quepos. January, February, and March are the top months — calm blue water, excellent visibility, and massive concentrations of sailfish make this the most popular time to book a charter.
During peak days, experienced captains regularly release 10 to 20+ sailfish on a single full-day offshore charter. Multiple hookups at once are common — a truly world-class experience for any angler.
Green Season Sailfish (November & May)
While the green season (May–November) is primarily known for marlin and tuna, sailfish activity remains good in May and November — the transition months. Anglers visiting during these periods often find excellent sailfish action with the added bonus of fewer boats on the water and lower charter rates.
Private sailfish charters available year-round from Quepos Marina. Expert local captains, all tackle included. December–April for peak action.
What to Expect on a Sailfish Charter
Most sailfish charters depart from Quepos Marina between 6:00 and 7:00 AM. The fishing grounds are typically 20–40 minutes offshore, depending on where the fish are holding. Your captain will use a combination of local knowledge, sea surface temperature data, and current patterns to find the best bite.
Sailfish are typically targeted using live bait and lures behind teasers. When a sailfish comes up to the spread, the crew will work quickly to get a bait in front of the fish — the strike is explosive and the fight is unforgettable.
Catch & Release
Costa Rica Fishing Company practices 100% catch and release for sailfish. These fish are a precious resource and releasing them ensures the fishery remains world-class for future generations. Your captain will work quickly to revive and release the fish while the crew documents the catch with photos.
Tackle & Equipment
All tackle and fishing equipment is included in your charter. We use light to medium tackle for sailfish — typically 20–30lb conventional gear — which makes for an exciting fight and gives the fish a fair chance. Heavier gear is available on request.
Our team of experienced local captains and fishing guides has been operating out of Quepos Marina for years. We share our knowledge of the local fishery to help anglers plan the perfect Costa Rica fishing trip.
