Why Roosterfish Is Quepos' Signature Inshore Catch

No inshore fish captures anglers' imagination quite like the roosterfish. Named for the dramatic, comb-like spines that rise off its back — often visible slicing through the surface before it's even hooked — it's one of the most striking and sought-after gamefish anywhere on Costa Rica's Pacific coast.

Roosterfish live close to the beach, patrolling the surf line, rocky points, and river mouths around Quepos and Manuel Antonio in search of bait, which makes them a hallmark catch of inshore fishing here.

Best Time for Roosterfish in Quepos

Roosterfish are caught in Quepos year-round, but the action picks up noticeably from June through September, during the green season, when baitfish push in close to shore and roosterfish follow them into range.

Outside those peak months they're still a realistic catch on any inshore trip, just with somewhat less consistent numbers than the June–September window.

How Many Roosterfish Can You Expect to Catch?

Roosterfish numbers vary more than some other inshore species — they can be notoriously selective about bait, and a good day might bring several hookups while a slower one brings one or two well-earned shots. Sight-casting to a visible dorsal fin cutting the surface is part of what makes the pursuit so exciting, hookup or not.

Catch and Release: The Standard Practice

The large majority of roosterfish caught in Quepos are released. It's not a strict rule the way it is with billfish, but it's standard practice on our charters to protect this iconic inshore fishery for the long term. Your captain and crew handle the release quickly, and you'll get photos of your catch first.

How We Target Roosterfish

Live bait — typically small bonito or mullet — trolled or cast near structure is the primary technique, since roosterfish hunt visually and respond to a struggling baitfish close to the surface. Captains watch the surf line and rocky points for the telltale sight of a dorsal fin breaking water before working a bait through the zone.

What to Expect on the Fight

Roosterfish are powerful, muscular fighters built for short, explosive bursts of speed rather than a long drawn-out battle. The initial run after the hookup is the strongest part of the fight, and landing one after watching that dorsal fin surface and disappear again is one of the most memorable moments in inshore fishing.
