Complete Guide to
Roosterfish in Quepos, Costa Rica
The roosterfish is one of the most iconic inshore game fish in the Pacific. Learn when, where, and how to target roosterfish along the shores of Manuel Antonio and Quepos, Costa Rica.
The roosterfish — named for the dramatic comb-like dorsal fin that rises when the fish is excited — is one of the most visually striking and hard-fighting inshore game fish in the Pacific Ocean. Found exclusively in the Eastern Pacific, Quepos and Manuel Antonio offer some of the best roosterfish fishing anywhere in Costa Rica.
Unlike offshore billfish, roosterfish are targeted in the waters immediately adjacent to the coastline — along sandy beaches, rocky points, and the edges of Manuel Antonio National Park. This makes them accessible on a half-day inshore charter, often with multiple hookups per trip during peak season.
Roosterfish are one of the hardest-fighting inshore species in the Pacific — their explosive runs and aerial acrobatics make every hookup an unforgettable experience, regardless of the angler's skill level.

Where to Find Roosterfish in Quepos
Roosterfish are found along the entire Central Pacific coastline, but the waters around Manuel Antonio National Park are particularly productive. The rocky points, sandy beaches, and reef structures within and adjacent to the park concentrate baitfish — and where there's bait, there are roosterfish.
Our captains target roosterfish along Playa Biesanz, Playa Espadilla, and the rocky headlands that border the park. These areas provide the perfect ambush points for roosterfish hunting smaller fish in the shallows.
How We Target Roosterfish
The most effective technique for roosterfish in Quepos is live bait fishing — specifically using mullet, sardines, or small jack crevalle as bait. The captain will troll or drift live baits along the shoreline, often within 50–100 meters of the beach. When a roosterfish hits, the strike is explosive and the fight is intense.
Fly fishing for roosterfish is also available on request — teasing fish to the surface with hookless lures, then presenting a fly is one of the most exciting ways to target this species. Ask us about fly fishing options when booking.
Our half-day inshore charter specifically targets roosterfish, cubera snapper, and jack crevalle along the shores of Manuel Antonio. All tackle included, expert local captain.
Roosterfish Facts
The roosterfish (Nematistius pectoralis) is the sole member of the family Nematistiidae. It gets its name from the seven long dorsal spines that resemble a rooster's comb — raised dramatically when the fish is excited or threatened. Roosterfish can reach over 100 lbs and 5 feet in length, though most fish caught in Quepos range from 10–40 lbs.
What to Expect on the Fight
Roosterfish are notorious for their explosive first runs — when hooked, they immediately sprint for open water at remarkable speed. Unlike sailfish which tend to jump repeatedly, roosterfish fight deep and hard, using their powerful body to maintain sustained pressure on the line throughout the battle.
On light to medium tackle, a 20–40 lb roosterfish can take 20–45 minutes to land. The fight is intensely physical and deeply satisfying — one of the best pound-for-pound battles in inshore fishing anywhere in the world.
Catch & Release
We practice catch and release for all roosterfish. These fish are not good eating and are far more valuable as a sportfish resource. Your captain will work quickly to photograph and revive the fish before releasing it back into the water in good condition.
